Matthew House Free Mock Hearing Prep: Tried and Tested
Matthew house gives you a chance to prepare for your hearing and help you deal with anxiety and build confidence as you prove that you in deed need protection in Canada.
THE MOST IMPORTANT DAY
A refugee claimant's hearing at the IRB is one of the most important days of their life. If they fail this hearing, they are at risk of being deported back to their country of origin, where they face persecution. While they are entitled to the help of a lawyer, legal aid can be challenging to access and few have the opportunity to truly practice before their hearing takes place.
To prepare for a mock hearing at Matthew House, consider the following steps:
- Understand the Format: Familiarize yourself with how hearings are conducted—opening statements, witness testimonies, cross-examinations.
- Review Relevant Materials: Go through any case files or documents provided to understand key facts and legal issues involved.
- Practice Your Role:
- If you’re representing a party (plaintiff/defendant), outline your arguments.
- Prepare questions if you’re acting as an attorney or questioning witnesses.
- Mock Questions & Answers: Anticipate possible questions from judges or opposing counsel and practice clear responses.
- Time Management: Ensure that each segment of your presentation fits within allotted time limits during practice sessions.
- Feedback Loop: After practicing, seek feedback from peers on clarity and persuasiveness; adjust accordingly.
- Stay Professional & Composed: Practice maintaining professionalism throughout the process regardless of challenges faced in role-play scenarios.
- Dress Appropriately: Wear professional attire suitable for court settings to enhance credibility during presentations.
By focusing on these areas, you’ll be well-prepared for your mock hearing experience!
