The PRIDE EVENT

The PRIDE EVENT

The PRIDE event in Toronto is an annual celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, featuring a series of events and activities that promote diversity, inclusion, and equality.

The event typically takes place over several days in June and includes a parade, performances, parties, art exhibits, panel discussions on LGBTQ+ issues.

PRIDE celebrations are rooted in the history of activism for gay rights. They commemorate the Stonewall Riots which took place at New York City’s Stonewall Inn in 1969 when members of the LGBT community fought back against police harassment - this marked a turning point for gay liberation movements worldwide.

In Toronto specifically , Pride Week has been celebrated since 1981 with various organizations coming together to organize events such as parades or marches through downtown streets.

This was  followed by concerts or rallies held at public parks where people can gather to celebrate their identities openly without fear discrimination from others who may not understand them fully yet still want to be supportive allies towards those struggling due societal norms placed upon individuals based solely off sexual orientation, gender identity, expression etcetera.

Pride also serves as an opportunity for advocacy work around important social justice issues affecting queer communities.

This  included and not limited to healthcare access, housing affordability, employment opportunities within traditionally conservative industries like law enforcement agencies (police), government institutions, schools, churches, businesses, corporations, non-profit organisations and charities foundations.
